Boot Consultation
Choosing the right figure skating boot is one of the most important equipment decisions a skater makes — and one of the most confusing. With multiple models, stiffness ratings, sizing systems, and blade pairings to consider, it is easy to end up with boots that hold you back instead of helping you progress. That is why we offer a free, no-pressure consultation to help you find the right boot for your specific situation.
What We Cover
Every skater is different. A boot that is perfect for one person may be completely wrong for another, even if they skate at the same level. During your consultation, we discuss:
- Current skill level. Where you are right now — the jumps you are landing, the moves you are working on, and how long you have been skating.
- Skating goals. Where you want to be in 6-12 months. Are you working toward your first Axel? Preparing for a competition? Training doubles? Your goals determine how much support you will need.
- Discipline. Freestyle, ice dance, and synchronized skating have different boot requirements. A freestyle skater landing jumps needs a stiffer boot than a dancer who prioritizes ankle articulation and glide.
- Budget. We believe in being straightforward about cost. We will recommend the boot that is right for your level — not the most expensive one we carry. Sometimes the best choice is the most affordable one.
How Stiffness Factors In
Boot stiffness is the most misunderstood specification in figure skating. Many skaters and parents assume stiffer means better. It does not. A boot that is too stiff for your level restricts the ankle flexion needed for proper knee bend — the foundation of virtually every skating skill. A boot that is too soft will collapse under forces it was never designed to handle.
We help you find the sweet spot based on your jumps, body weight, and training intensity. For example, a lightweight skater working on singles may thrive in an Overture at stiffness 55, while a heavier skater at the same level might benefit from the additional support of a Chorus at 75.

What Else We Consider
Beyond skill level and stiffness, several factors influence which boot is the best match:
- Body weight. Heavier skaters generate more force on landings and may need to go one stiffness level higher than what their skill level alone suggests.
- Skating frequency. A skater training five days a week breaks down boots faster than someone skating twice a week. More frequent skaters may benefit from a slightly stiffer boot that maintains support over a longer lifespan.
- Injury history. Previous ankle injuries, chronic pain, or structural issues like bunions or high arches all affect which boot and width will work best. We factor these in so you are not fighting your equipment.
- Current boot condition. If you are replacing an existing boot, knowing how it has performed — where it broke down, where it caused pain, what you liked and disliked — helps us make a better recommendation.
No Pressure to Buy
Our consultation is free, and there is absolutely no obligation to purchase. We want you in the right boot — period. If the right boot for you is one we do not carry, we will tell you. If you are not ready to buy yet, that is fine too. We would rather you make an informed decision on your own timeline than rush into a purchase you are not sure about.
This is what sets us apart from just ordering online. You are not selecting a boot from a dropdown menu and hoping for the best. You are getting personalized guidance from people who understand skating equipment at a technical level.
Available In-Person or Remotely
We offer consultations at our Kentucky location, where we can combine the conversation with hands-on boot measuring and even try-on sessions. If you are not local, we are happy to consult by phone or email — just reach out and we will set up a time that works for you.
