REV Carbon Fiber Blades

REV — short for Revolution — is a carbon fiber chassis technology developed by blade manufacturers to reduce weight, improve energy transfer, and insulate the skater's foot from the cold of the ice. REV blades represent one of the most significant advances in figure skating blade design in decades, and they are now available across several of the most popular blade models.

What Is the REV Chassis?

In a traditional figure skating blade, the chassis (also called the sole plate) is made entirely of steel or aluminum. This is the flat portion of the blade that sits against the bottom of the boot and holds the vertical runner in place. The REV system replaces this metal chassis with one made from 100% unidirectional carbon fibers, compression-molded with thermosetting resin.

The manufacturing process is critical to the performance of the finished product. Unidirectional carbon fibers — meaning all fibers run in the same direction — provide maximum strength along the length of the blade where stresses are greatest. Compression molding under heat and pressure with thermosetting resin creates a solid, void-free composite that will not delaminate or flex unpredictably. The result is a chassis that is dramatically lighter than steel while maintaining the rigidity skaters need for precise edge control and power transfer.

Benefits of REV Technology

Benefit How It Helps
Weight reduction Carbon fiber is significantly lighter than steel. Less weight on your feet means less fatigue, higher jumps, and faster footwork.
Thermal insulation Metal conducts heat away from your foot into the ice. Carbon fiber insulates, keeping feet warmer during sessions.
Energy transfer Superior stiffness-to-weight ratio means less energy lost to chassis flex during push-offs and landings.
💡 Tip: Combine a REV blade with a lightweight EDEA boot (like the Ice Fly or Piano) for the maximum total weight savings on your setup.

Blades with REV Technology

Blade Brand Profile Best For
MK Phantom REV MK Tapered, 7-ft rocker Advanced/elite multi-rotation jumps
MK Gold Star REV MK Tapered, 7-ft rocker Championship-level spin performance
JW Gold Seal REV John Wilson Tapered, 8-ft rocker Elite competitors who prefer 8-ft stability
JW Pattern 99 REV John Wilson Parallel, 8-ft rocker Skaters who prefer parallel rigidity + iconic rocker

REV vs. Phoenix: Understanding the Difference

Feature REV Blades Phoenix Series
Chassis material Carbon fiber Carbon fiber
Blade body Traditional steel stanchions Entire body is carbon fiber
Runner Carbon steel Stainless steel
Weight savings Significant Maximum (46% lighter than traditional)
Models Phantom REV, Gold Star REV, Gold Seal REV, Pattern 99 REV Phoenix 99, Phoenix Gold
💡 Tip: The Phoenix series is the lightest blade configuration available, but REV blades maintain the exact same runner and edge characteristics as their standard counterparts — so upgrading to REV is seamless.
