Taking Care of Your Boots
Figure skating boots are a significant investment, and proper care can dramatically extend their life and performance. Whether you skate in EDEA's Technomicro models like the Ice Fly and Piano or leather boots like the Overture, Chorus, and Concerto, a consistent routine will keep your boots supportive and looking their best.
Your Daily After-Skating Routine
What you do in the first few minutes after stepping off the ice matters more than anything else. Make these steps a habit after every session:
Step 1: Wipe down your blades immediately.
Use a clean, dry cloth to remove all moisture from the blade surface, including under the sole plate. This is the single most important thing you can do to prevent rust.
Step 2: Loosen your laces fully.
Pulling boots off with tight laces stretches and reshapes the ankle area over time. Loosen all the way down before removing each boot.
Step 3: Wipe the boot exterior.
Use a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove ice shavings, dirt, and moisture from the outside of the boot.
Step 4: Stand the tongue upright.
A tongue that gets folded or twisted during storage will slowly distort, reducing performance and fit. Straighten it so it can hold its shape.
Step 5: Insert odor absorbers.
Place EDEA Odor & Moisture Absorbers inside each boot. The activated charcoal neutralizes odor while non-toxic silica gel draws out moisture.
Step 6: Switch to soft blade covers.
Once blades are dry, slip on Soft Blade Covers to protect edges and absorb remaining moisture. Never store blades in hard walking guards.
Step 7: Air out the boots.
Never seal damp boots in a bag. Leave them open in a well-ventilated area so the lining can dry completely.
Storage Best Practices
How you store your boots between sessions directly impacts how long they maintain their stiffness and support:
- Store at room temperature. Never leave boots in a car trunk, garage, or near a heater. Extreme heat damages adhesives and warps structure, while extreme cold makes materials brittle.
- Do not store boots in your skate bag. A zipped bag traps moisture and creates the perfect environment for mold and odor. Only bag boots once completely dry.
- Use storage straps. EDEA Storage Straps keep gentle tension on the ankle area while stored, training the boot to maintain its lateral support and delaying natural softening.
- Put on soft blade covers. Once blades are dry, slip on Soft Blade Covers to protect edges and absorb remaining moisture.
Protecting Boot Exteriors with SK8TAPE
SK8TAPE is one of the best investments for boot protection during practice. This waterproof adhesive tape creates an invisible armor layer, shielding the upper from scratches, scrapes, and moisture. It conforms to the boot's curves, stays in place for months, and peels off cleanly with no residue. Available in White, Black, and Beige to match your boots.
For restoring scuffed boots, EDEA Skate Polish is a water-based formula that covers scratches and streaks, leaving boots competition-ready. For detailed cleaning techniques, visit our guide on How to Clean Your Boots.
Using Odor Absorbers
Skating boots absorb significant sweat, and without intervention, they develop persistent odor and internal moisture damage. The EDEA Odor & Moisture Absorber combines activated charcoal to neutralize odor with non-toxic, DMF-free silica gel to draw out moisture. Insert a pair after every session and leave them in during storage. When saturated, place the absorbers on a radiator or in a low-temperature oven to regenerate them.
When Boots Need Replacing
Even with excellent care, all boots eventually break down. Watch for these signs:
- Loss of ankle support. If you can push the boot sideways at the ankle easily, or your ankle rolls inward during skating, the boot has lost structural stiffness.
- Visible creasing at the ankle. Deep creases indicate the materials have fatigued.
- The boot feels "dead." When jumps no longer feel solid on takeoff and landing, the internal support layers have broken down.
- Sole separation or visible damage. Cracks in the sole, separation between sole and upper, or damaged eyelets are clear signals to replace.
