What Makes Jackson Boots Special

Jackson is designed in Canada, and builds the widest range of figure skating boots we carry — from a toddler's first pair through to boots built for triples and quads. That range is the point: rather than one construction stretched across every skater, Jackson develops its lasts, soles and materials for the level each boot is meant to serve. This guide covers the technology underneath.

Two Lasts, Not One

A last is the form a boot is built around — it decides the shape your foot has to fit. Most makers use one and size it up and down. Jackson uses two, because a competitive fit and a comfortable fit are not the same problem.

  • Elite Performance Last. A rounder, wider toe box to reduce pressure across the toes, paired with a narrower heel to lock the foot in place. This is the competitive fit, and it suits the common foot shape that is broad at the front and slim at the back — the shape that otherwise forces skaters into a wide boot that then slips at the heel.
  • Adapted Width (AW) Last. A more relaxed fit, particularly through the arch, for skaters who find a competition last too tight through the midfoot.
💡 Tip: If you have a wide forefoot and a slim heel, try the Elite last in Regular before assuming you need a Wide. The shape may already be doing the job a wide fitting would do elsewhere. See Jackson Boot Sizing for widths by line.

The Jackson Wrap System

Support in a skating boot is not one thing — it comes from how the boot wraps the foot and ankle at several points. Jackson builds this as a named system rather than a set of unrelated features:

  • Cuff Wrap with internal leather reinforcement — lateral support at the top of the boot, where ankle collapse happens.
  • Graduated Instep Wrap, incorporating the Flex Notch — an increased wrap over the instep for fit, control and security through hard edges and jump take-offs.
  • Asymmetrical interior ankle pads, shaped anatomically rather than symmetrically, so the boot holds the ankle bones where they actually sit.
  • Soft collar and backstrap, redesigned to ease pressure on the Achilles tendon while adding stability through the lower calf.

Flex Notch

A stiff boot has a fundamental conflict built into it: you need it rigid enough to survive landings, but you also need to bend your knees, which is the foundation of almost every skill in skating. The Flex Notch is Jackson's answer — a notch that minimises ankle and knee strain on forward flex while improving stability. It lets the boot bend forward where you need it to, without giving up the lateral support that stops your ankle rolling.

Low Cut models take the same idea further with a u-shaped cuff that clears the Achilles entirely, opening up the range of motion dance and synchro skaters need.

Heat-Moldable Construction

Jackson boots are built to fit tight when cold, then soften with heat and take the shape of your foot as they cool. The construction alternates split-leather reinforcement panels with heat-moldable materials, so the boot keeps its strength exactly where it needs it while still customising to your foot in minutes.

The heat-sensitive material that makes this work is surlyn, present in the intermediate and elite series. Heat molding is safe to repeat, and blades can stay mounted while it is done.

💡 Tip: Jackson boots mold in a convection oven, which is a different process from EDEA's targeted heat-gun shaping. Both get you a custom fit; they get there differently. See Heat Molding & Custom Shaping.

Uppers and Linings

Material What it does
Suede leather The traditional upper on the Supreme line — classic look, proven durability.
Cut-resistant microfiber Lightweight synthetic upper used through much of the range.
Dura-guard Protective microfiber that shields the boot against blade contact — cut protection, not just wear resistance.
Microfiber lining with memory foam Moisture wicking and treated with anti-bacterial properties, so the inside of the boot stays drier and fresher.
Split-leather reinforcement Alternated with heat-moldable panels to place strength precisely where the boot is loaded.

Three Soles

The sole carries every landing force into the blade, and Jackson builds three, each with a different balance of weight, rigidity and blade grip.

Sole Construction
Fusion Sole Lightweight nylon composite, torque resistant and waterproof. A rubber inlay provides a non-slip blade mount and absorbs shock on landings.
PBX Sole Combines flexibility and rigidity with ABS insoles. A three-piece design allows ABS heels for the strength and security of the mounting screws, in a sleek, low-profile shape.
Leather Carbon Fiber (LCF) 15% lighter than a traditional leather cork composite sole, water and torque resistant, with a rubber bottom layer for a non-slip blade mount.

The PBX heel is the quietly clever part. Screw retention is the weak point of any skating sole — screws work loose, and the material around them eventually gives up. Jackson engineered the heel material specifically around holding screws, which is a different answer to the same problem other makers solve with a proprietary screw thread.

⚠️ The sole is not a separate choice. You pick the model, and the sole comes with it. In the men's Supreme line specifically, the sole follows your size — PBX up to size 11, Fusion from 11.5 to 13 — so a larger-footed skater in the same model gets the Fusion sole. Do not go looking for a "sole option" on the product page; there isn't one.

Footbeds and Insoles

Jackson puts real engineering below the foot, not just padding:

  • Matrix Footbed — built from Poron throughout, over an EVA base layer that cushions while providing a stable platform.
  • Supreme insoles — feature a reversed arch, shaped to support a skating motion rather than a walking motion. Your foot does something different on a blade than it does on the ground, and the insole is built for the former.
  • ProSupport+ insole — seven layers of padding, available separately to upgrade the footbed in any boot.

The Widest Support Range We Carry

Jackson rates every boot on its Support Rating scale, and that scale runs from 2 to 95 — from a toddler's first skates through to boots built for triples and quads. No other line we carry spans that much ground, which is why Jackson appears at both ends of almost every guide on this site.
